I feel
very humble about calling myself a record producer. I've been recording for decades and always knew there was much information and lots of gear and techniques that were out of my reach...
But now I have a newfound confidence. My last two albums were recorded 4-Track. That's barely a step above LIVE RECORDING.
Like Mark Twain said, "winning is not the cards in your hand -- it's how you play them."
That's where I've really proved myself, to myself, and everyone else. I have created some world class music using very limited resources.
As for one friend of mine who claims to have 2 Grammys as a recording engineer / but he calls himself a producer... he'd deluded.
A record producer is like the director of a movie. He coordinates the technical with the mechanical with the creative with the talent with the environment and creates an artistic product.
More later.
